Xiaomi has just released the Redmi Note 11 phones globally, and without a surprise, these new phones do not come with a native notification LED light, and because of that, today, I’ll be teaching how to use the center hole-punch camera cutout on them as a custom hole-punch notification LED.
Something that will end up looking this way by the time that we’re done setting everything up.
It looks cool, right?
Sure.
So, if you stick around long enough, I’ll be showing you how to replicate this exact thing on your new Xiaomi Redmi Note 11, Redmi Note 11 Pro and Pro 5G, the Note 11 Pro+, Redmi Note 11S, and the Redmi Note 11T smartphones.
So, without ado, let’s begin. #enjoy.

How to set up your own custom hole punch notification LED light on your Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 phones
Step one
First of all, we have to download an app from the Google Play Store, it is called the “AOE: Always On Edge” app, and without this app, we can’t set up our custom hole punch notification LED light on our Redmi Note 11 phones.
Download now: Always On Edge app.
So, quickly head over to the Play Store by using the link above, and simply download and install the app on your mobile phone.

Step two
Now after we have downloaded and installed the said app, it’s time to begin setting things up.
So, go ahead and open the app, and when you do so, you should have an interface or home screen that looks like something that was copied out of Samsung’s One UI homework.
And right on the home screen, you get a plethora of setting options, ranging from permissions to Edge Lighting setting options, Always On Display+, Notifications Ticker, etc, and we’re gonna go over, one after the other.
So, let’s start with the very first one, “Required Permissions“, and go ahead and tap on it to open it.
So, as expected, from here, you get to grant or give access to the required permissions that are necessary for the app to work properly on your phone, and as you can see from the screenshot below, they’re are divided into two sections, the “Required Permissions“, and the “Optional permissions (preferred)“.
Required permissions are the ones that are necessary and must be set or granted for the app to work on your phone, while optional permissions can be either granted or not, depending on what functions of the app you want to use.
But for the sake of this tutorial, I’ll advise that you set yours exactly the way you can see them from the screenshot below.
And after you’ve done that, don’t forget to save your settings, and meet us in the next step below.

Step three
After you’re done setting your permissions, simply go back to the app’s homepage, and from there, go ahead and tap on the second setting option which says, “Edge Lighting“, and you should have a new page that looks this way.
And as you can see, this one comes with even its own sub-menus such as Main Settings, App Settings, Lighting Settings, etc, and this is where we’ll be spending most of our time and doing most of our setup of the custom hole punch notification LED light for our Redmi Note 11 phones.
So, simply go ahead and tap on the first setting option, “Main Settings“, and you will be taken to a new screen that looks like the screenshot below.
From this page, you’ll get to choose how you want the app to light up on your phone. Do you want it to work together with your phone’s default Always On Display feature, or do you want it to work separately on its own?
Personally, I chose mine to work with the default Always On Display feature on my phone since the Redmi Note 11 phones have that, and I’ll urge you to do the same too by simply changing the selection from “Independent (Default)“, to any of the other three options, which are; “With AOD“, “With AOD invisible“, or “With AOD Tap To Show“.
“With AOD” simply means setting it to show always, while “With AOD invisible” gives you three additional options, either to show it only when you have a new notification, or when the phone is charging, or by scheduling it to show and not show at specific times of the day.
And finally, “With AOD Tap To Show” lets you set it so that it only shows up for a few seconds, whenever you tap on your phone’s screen.
And since Xiaomi only allows you to set the Always On Display to be shown just for ten seconds after you tap on your phone’s screen, then the best option to select here is the last one, “With AOD Tap To Show” as shown in the screenshot below.
And lastly, do take note that whichever option you set to it, you must also go to your phone’s Always On Display settings and select the appropriate options for them.
For instance, if you set yours to “With AOD Tap To Show“, then your phone’s default Always On Display settings must also be set to tap to show as well.
You get the point now right?
And don’t forget to save your settings before leaving the current page.

Step four
Now, after we’re done with the app’s main settings, it’s time to move on to other things. So, simply go back to the previous page you came from, which is the “Edge Lighting” page, and from there, tap on the second option which says “App Settings“, and you should have a new page that looks this way.
So, more like the main settings page, this page also lets you set how the app interacts with notifications on your phone, and even gives you more setting options to play with.
And to make things easy for you, and save time as well, simply tap on the first option there labeled “When to turn on Edge Lighting” to expand it and reveal all the options under it.
Now leave everything the way they are, and keep scrolling down to the bottom of the page until you get to the option that says “Automatic, whenever I lock the screen” and select that one.
What this does is, the app will immediately get activated the moment you turn your phone’s screen off, but if you don’t want it that way, you can set it to get activated only after some minutes of turning your phone’s screen off by selecting the “Minutes after device lock” option.
Or, if you want to be more conservative of battery, you can set it to only get activated when you receive a new notification, and your phone’s screen is off. The setting option to do that is located at the top of the page with the label “Notifications Lighting“.
But like I said before, to make things easier and less confusing for you, and to save time as well, simply set it like the way I’ve shown you from the screenshot above.
And after that, go ahead and save your settings, and meet us on the net step below.
Step five
Now go back to the “Edge Lighting” page, and from there, tap on the third setting option labeled “Lighting Settings“, and you should have a new page that looks this way.
Now, this is one of the most important aspects of this app, as this is where you get to customize the look and feel of your newly found hole punch notification LED light on your Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 phones.
So, first of all, make sure that the “Enable Edge Lighting” toggle is set to on if it wasn’t when you got there.
Skip the “Device Screen Corners” tab and jump straight to the “Enable Notch Support” tab, once again, tap on it to expand it.
From there, change the selection to “Adjust Manually“, and set the “Notch Type” to “O“.
After that, you can use the “Notch Width” and “Notch Height” sliders to increase or reduce the size of the notch, which is now your notification LED light.
You can leave “Curve Radius” the way it is and use the “Top (set 0 if not hole)” slider to move the notch either up or down to align it properly with the hole punch cutout on your Redmi phone, just in case yours wasn’t aligned properly before now.
And from the three positioning options shown to you which are “Right“, “Left“, and “Center“, simply set it to “Center”.
And once you’re done with resizing and positioning your notch, you can choose to increase or reduce its thickness by using the “Edge Thickness” slider, but again, I’ll advise that you leave it the way it is when you got there.
And moving further down, tap on the next tab there which says “Lighting Placement” to expand it, and from the options shown to you, simply set it to “Around Notch Only“.
And with that, the other edge lights shown around the edge of your phone’s screen will disappear, leaving you with only the one shown around your phone’s camera hole punch cutout.
And moving further down once again, we get to the “Edges Style” tab, and from here, you get to choose a style for your hole punch notification LED.
If you chose the first style, which is “LED“, it gives you a huge collection of artistic styles to choose from, but it displaces the sizing and positioning setup which you have made before, and you’ll have to go back to the “Lighting Placement” tab to resize and reposition them once again.
While the other styles work perfectly with the setup you have done before.
So, after choosing your most preferred style, keep going down the page until you get to the “Edge Color Amount” tab, and as always, tap on it to expand it.
From here, you get to choose colors for your hole punch notification LED. If you have previously chosen the “LED” lighting style from the “Edges Style” tab, then you won’t be able to change the colors, but if you chose any other style aside from it, then you can change the colors to your heart fill.
And then after that, you can change the “Lighting Effect“, and “Edges Speed“.
And after that, simply go ahead and save your settings, and below is a full screenshot of the complete setup on my phone. You can choose to set yours like that too if you want to.
Step six
Now, after you’re done setting and saving your settings from the last step above, I’ll advise that you leave the rest setting options from the “Edge Lighting” settings page the way they are and not tinker with them especially if you set the app to work with your phone’s native Always On Display feature from the “Main Settings” options from Step three above.
But if you set yours to work independently, then you can go to the “Extra Widgets” option and select the widgets such as Display clock, notification icons, battery level, etc, that you want to be shown alongside the notification LED light, but that’s only if you have chosen yours to work separately or independently from your Redmi phone’s native Always On Display.
Step seven
And to even add more feel and life to your custom hole punch notification LED on your Redmi Note 11 phones, there is one more setting option that we need to enable from the homepage, and it’s called the “Notifications Ticker“.
What this does is, whenever you get a new notification on your phone, it will show you a stylish brief preview of the said notification just beside your hole-punch camera cutout, and this is done only when your phone screen is on, and not when it’s off like the native Always On Display.
And to get it activated, simply make your way back to the app’s homepage, locate the option that says “Notifications Ticker” and tap on it, and you should have a new page that looks this way.
Simply switch on the Notifications Ticker toggle, and finally, grant it the “Required Permission” for the feature to work, and select your most preferred style.
Step eight
After doing all that, we’re mostly done with the fundamental setup, and all we have to do right now is take the app for a test.
So, make sure that you’ve followed everything written and discussed so far appropriately, and make sure that all your settings are saved.
Now, go ahead and turn off your phone’s display, and at this juncture, the app will behave or work according to how you have set it to work, both from the “Main settings page” in step three above, and the “Edge Lighting” “App Settings” page on Step four.
So, from the “Edge Lighting” “App Settings” page, if you have set yours to light up “Automatically, when you lock the screen“, and you have chosen the “With AOD” option from the “Main Settings” page, and have also set your phone’s native always-on display feature to “Show always“, then the hole punch notification LED will light up immediately you turn off your phone screen, and your phone’s always-on display gets activated.
But if you have selected “With AOD invisible” and have set it to “Show On notifications“, and you’ve also set your phone’s always-on display feature to “Show only on notifications“, then the notification LED will light up only when you receive a new notification.
And finally, if you have set yours to “with AOD Tap To Show” like mine, and you have set your phone’s always-on display to tap to show, then the notification LED will light up whenever you tap on your phone’s screen.
So, whichever way you have set up the app determines how and when the notification LED shows up when you turn off your phone’s screen.
So, if everything is working correctly on your Redmi Note 11 phone, then good luck to you, but if it isn’t, then I’ll advise that you go back to the steps discussed above, and see what you might be missing.
Extra features
So, aside from setting a custom hole punch notification LED light, the app also gives you a huge collection of cool animated wallpapers that you can choose from and apply them on your phone’s lock screen, home screen, or on both.
To get these wallpapers, simply go back to the app’s homepage, and from the options listed there, locate and tap on the one that says “Animated Wallpapers“, and you will be taken to a page that looks this way.
And from here, you can see all the animated wallpapers contained in the app which is all provided by the developer, and to apply anyone on your phone, you can either pay $2 for the app or watch a video ad that gives you the permission to have the wallpaper on your phone’s screen for seven days.
And that wraps it up for today on how you can set up and use a customized virtual hole punch inspired notification LED light on your new Xiaomi Redmi Note 11, Redmi Note 11 Pro & 11 Pro 5G, the Note 11 Pro+, Redmi Note 11s, and the Note 11T smartphones.
