All phones under the Xiaomi Mi 11 umbrella don’t have a native notification LED, and I guess that shouldn’t sound surprising to anyone anymore in 2021.
And today, I’m gonna show you a very simple and quick trick that lets you use the camera hole punch cutout on these phones as a customizable virtual hole punch inspired notification LED.
Here’s a demo of it on a Samsung Galaxy S20 smartphone, but will work the same way for these Xiaomi phones in question.
It looks cool right?
Sure, it does. And without further ado, let’s see how we can recreate this on our various Xiaomi Mi 11 smartphones.
This tutorial stands true for all Xiaomi phones under the Mi 11 umbrella, such as the vanilla Xiaomi Mi 11, the Mi 11 Pro, 11 Ultra, Mi 11x and 11x Pro, Xiaomi Mi 11i, Mi 11 Lite, and 11 Lite 5G.

How to set up and make use of a customizable virtual hole punch inspired notification LED on the Xiaomi Mi 11, 11x, 11i, & 11 Lite smartphones.
Step One
Hurriedly find your way to Google Play Store, when you get there, search for and download the app named “aodNotify“, or better still, you can save yourself that stress and time by simply tapping on the button that says “Install” below.
When the app has been downloaded and installed on your Xiaomi phone, open it for the first time, and you’ll be greeted with this welcome screen.
From this screen, tap the button that says “NEXT” at the bottom of it, and next (pun intended), you’ll be redirected to the app’s permission setup page, from where you’ll be required to grant the app access to the necessary permissions that will be requested from you.
After you’re done granting the said permissions, simply tap the button that says “DONE” at the bottom of your screen once again, and this time, you’ll be ushered into the app’s main settings page or homepage.
Xiaomi Mi 11 notification LED – Step Two
From the app’s homepage, tap on the first setting option there labeled “Notifications“, and you’ll be taken to a new page that looks this way.
From this page, you’ll be able to set what apps you wish to receive notifications from, which will, in turn, trigger your virtual hole punch notification LED on your Mi 11 phones.
For mine, I selected all the apps installed on my phone, and apart from apps, you can also set the custom hole punch notification LED to act as a virtual battery indicator, by setting when to turn on using various battery percentage levels.
The options on the page are self-explanatory, so, no big deal here. Now let’s move on to the next step.
Step Three
When you’re done setting what apps that you want to receive notifications from, now go back to the app’s main settings page, and this time, tap on the second setting option there labeled “Notification light“, and this new page will be opened to you.
As you can see on your phone’s screen, this page has three additional individual setting options, and these settings options are used to customize your virtual hole punch notification LED on your Xiaomi Mi 11 phones by adding styles, effects, and even changing the size, and position of it.
The “Style” option lets you set what areas of your Mi 11 phone screen that you want your custom hole punch notification LED to be displayed on.
You can set it whether to be displayed only around the camera hole punch area of the phone or around the entire screen edges of the phone. And for the sake of what this tutorial aims to achieve, we’re gonna set ours to be displayed only around the camera cutout of our Mi 11 phones.
“Effects” option lets you add any one of the various animation effects to your custom hole punch notification LED. The free version of the app gives you limited options to choose from, while the paid version unlocks all the animation effects.
And finally, “Dimensions” lets you reposition and resize your custom hole punch notification LED using sliders.
Offset position X & Y sliders are for position, and they let you move your custom hole punch notification LED to Left, right, up, and down.
While Offset size X & Y options are for resizing, and they let you increase and decrease the size of your hole punch notification LED from all four sides until you get the perfect fit for the actual hole punch cutout present on your Mi 11 smartphones.
So, use these sliders until the custom hole punch notification LED is properly aligned with the actual hole punch cutout on your Mi 11 smartphones, and with proper sizing too.
Xiaomi Mi 11 notification LED – Step Four
When you’re done setting things to your preference from the last step above, go back to the app’s main settings page, and this time, select the next setting option there labeled “Settings“, and you should be redirected to a new page that looks this way.
From this new page, you’ll be able to set whether you want your custom hole punch notification LED on your Mi 11 phone to be active even when you have a new incoming call. It is advisable to leave this option enabled.
The next option there says “Double tap to wake“, leave that one enabled as well.
Now go back to the app’s homepage (main settings page), and this time, tap the next setting option there labeled “colors“, and you should have this new page showing on your phone’s screen.
The page on its own is very self-explanatory, and from here, you’ll be able to choose what colors should be used for your custom hole punch notification LED.
You can set separate individual colors for each app on your phone, assuming that you have the time, you can also choose different colors to show different battery levels, contact colors for when you have a new notification from chosen contacts on your phone, etc.
Final Step (Testing & Utilization)
So, to complete this tutorial session, we’ll have to take our app and all the settings we have done so far in it for a spin, to confirm that everything is working the way we want them to.
So, quickly go ahead and close the app, and turn off your phone’s display. After doing that, try to get a second phone, and with that phone, use it to quickly send anything that can trigger a new notification on your phone, a simple short text message should do the trick.
And when the notification arrives on your phone, you should see your new custom hole punch inspired notification LED in the form of a light ring glowing around the camera hole punch cutout of your Xiaomi Mi 11, 11x, and 11 Lite smartphones, indicating that you have a new unopened notification.
If yours doesn’t work, then that means you must have missed one or two steps from the steps listed and discussed above.
You can quickly come back to this page and check what you’re missing, or better still, leave us a comment in the comments section below, telling us what area of the app that you’re having issues with, and we’ll try to help you with that as fast as we can.
But in the meantime, if you find this tutorial helpful, kindly give it a thumbs up by sharing it, and as always, I’ll see you all tomorrow, #peace out.

Great app and great instructions. My problem is that the light around the camera only stays on for about 5 to 10 seconds and does not come on again. How do I adjust so that the light stays on until I check it?
Under “Notification light”, you should see an option that says Duration. You can use it to extend the light duration.
Does it require always on display to be active? Notification light goes off after three blinks when in lock mode
No, it doesn’t. Kindly check the duration you’ve set for it.
