The Good Side of the Dark Web

Advertisements

Embarking on an adventure to the dark web could potentially alter your life for the better, notwithstanding the negative reputation this corner of the internet has garnered. The dark web is rarely portrayed in a positive light in news, movies, and literature. Consequently, the mere mention of it evokes images of sinister activities for many, overshadowing the potential benefits that the dark web offers. The positive aspects of the dark web remain largely unknown to most, and it is my hope that this blog will shed light on its brighter side.

What is the Dark Web?

The internet is divided into two sections like the moon:

  • the surface or clear webA
  • the deep web (which contains the dark web)
The Surface or Clear Web

Most people are familiar with the surface or clear web because that’s the part of the web the average individual knows. This section of the internet consists of websites that have been indexed by search engines for optimal display of search results. Each indexed site is already verified and ranked according to its authority and usefulness.

The Deep Web

Some mistake the deep web with the dark web, but both are not the same. The deep web includes emails, private social-media correspondence, and other web content you need registration and password to see. You need special authorisation to access the deep web, but lesser can land you in the dark web.

The Dark Web

The dark web consists of sites that can be accessed using special browsers like Tor and Freenet, typically used for sharing, finding information, or chatting in a secure environment. Due to the nature of this corner of the web, it often attracts a large number of malicious actors. But don’t let this stop you from seeing the good side of the dark web.

Why the Dark Web Exists

The dark web was originally intended exclusively for the United States military but was later opened to the world. As is often said, necessity is the mother of invention. The dark web was created to address the need for secure communication and essential anonymity. Governments monitor their citizens both online and offline, so the dark web provides a means for the general public, such as journalists, dissenters, and whistleblowers, to share or receive information with reduced risk of being traced.

Good Things about the Dark Web

Many will liken the dark web to Knockturn Alley in Harry Potter because of the uncountable amount of dark things that can be acquired through it. However, though the activities carried out in the dark web are done in the shadows, we agreed that not all of them are dark activities.

Democracies and dictatorships exhibit a common behavior: suppressing dissent and controlling the flow of information. Countries such as China, South Africa, the United States, and Zimbabwe impose restrictions on what they disclose to the public. Occasionally, the secrets safeguarded by a country, such as the one China withheld during the COVID-19 outbreak, could be beneficial if shared openly.

Finally, every technology can be used for ugly purposes because humans make choices for different reasons. Our ability to do wrong must not make us ignore the good side of the dark web.
