So, a few days back, Tecno has officially taken the veils off its quite long-waited and heavily-advertised Tecno Camon 17 smartphones.
It comes in a trio of three individual devices, the vanilla Tecno Camon 17, the Tecno Camon 17P, and the Tecno Camon 17 Pro, with the Pro version, being the leader of the pack.
So, what do you get on here, and considering the fact that the Camon 16 series are even barely up to a year old from the day they were launched, what might have made Tecno be in such a hurry to announce their successors, and how does the new Camon 17 series, differ from the Camon 16 series?
Well, without further ado, let’s find out. #enjoy.
Tecno Camon 17
- 6.6 Inches 720p LCD display.
- 90Hz refresh rate.
- Mediatek Helio G85 processor.
- 4/6GB RAM + 128GB storage.
- 48MP triple rear cameras.
- 8MP front-facing camera.
- 5000mAh battery (18W fast charging).
The vanilla Tecno Camon 17 phone is the last-born child among the Camon 17 trio, and the display on the device is the first thing that goes further to cement that statement.
So, while the rest of the new Camon family come rocking colossal 6.8 inches sized display panels, the vanilla Camon 17 phone follows closely behind with what used to be an oversized, but now normal 6.6 Inches sized one.
Sadly, the resolution is still locked at 720p (720 x 1600 pixels), giving you a total pixel density of 266 PPI, but, the icing on the cake here is; the display has been fitted with up to 90Hz refresh rate speeds, so you should expect smoother scrolling and overall better display performance on here as compared to previous Tecno Camon smartphones, but don’t get carried away, as this is still an LCD panel.
The processor has been upgraded too, from Mediatek’s Helio G70 chipset on the Camon 16 to Helio G85 on this new one, and you get a base storage configuration of 128 Gigabytes, with 4 Gigabytes of RAM capacity, and this number can go up to 6 Gigabytes of RAM, while storage remains the same.
One very significant aspect where there has been a downgrade on the new Camon 17 smartphone, is on the cameras.
So, while the Camon 16 from last year had a 64MP main camera sensor on the back, with three other auxiliary sensors which brings the number to a total of four cameras on the back, with a 16MP unit on the front;
The Camon 17 instead, has a 48MP main sensor on the back, with two other supporting sensors to go along with it, which brings it to a total of three cameras on the back.
The second one is a 2MP depth sensor, yes, useless, I know, while the third one wasn’t specified, but I bet it’d be one of those still useless and gimmicky AI-branded low-light sensors that Tecno wouldn’t give up on including on their phones.
While on the front still sits an 8MP unit, which is yet another downgrade from the 16MP unit that was used on the Camon 16 phone from last year.
In terms of design, Tecno has taken what I choose to call a less aggressive approach on the new Camon lineup, as opposed to the shouty approach they used on the Camon 16 lineup, especially with their camera bumps.
So, on the Camon 17 phones, you now get all the cameras lined up on top of each other in a single straight line setup instead of the huge square bump that featured on last year’s models.
As expected, you’ll get Android 11 out of the box, which in turn has a total makeover using Tecno’s proprietary HiOS version 7.6 software skin.
And just so you, you won’t be getting any software updates with this phone, so, you’ll be stuck with Android 11 on it, probably till Tecno launches the Camon 18 lineup in a few months’ time, and maybe that one will bring Android 12 along with it. Lmao.
Powering the whole thing is the same 5000mAh battery tank that was on the Camon 16 phone from last year, but this time, this tank can be refilled using an 18W fast charging system, which should result in slightly shorter charging times.
Tecno Camon 17P
- 6.8 Inches 1080p LCD display.
- 60Hz refresh rate.
- Mediatek Helio G85 processor.
- 6GB RAM + 128GB storage.
- 64MP quad rear cameras.
- 16MP front-facing camera.
- 5000mAh battery (18W fast charging).
The Tecno Camon 17P is the middle child among the recently announced Camon 17 lineup, and just so you know, this phone is mostly identical to the vanilla Camon 17 phone that we just finished discussing up there, than it does towards the Camon 17 Pro.
And, speaking of which device that the Camon 17P replaces in the Camon 16 family, that will be the Camon 16 Pro, while the Camon 17 Pro replaces the Camon 16 Premier.
Yeah, that’s just Tecno and their crazy and ever-confusing naming schemes that keeps changing every now and then. I mean, why not just create one simple way of naming your phones, and stick with it?
Why Premier this year, then “P” next year, maybe Pro the year after, and so on and so forth?
Well, aside from the confusing names, on here you’re getting a slightly bigger, but what I call an enormous 6.8 Inches sized display, and with this, you’re getting a 1080p (1080 x 2460 pixels) resolution, but Tecno has taken away the 90Hz refresh rate feature here, so, you get the normal 60Hz refresh rate that you’re used to.
The processor stays the same at Helio G85, and you only get one RAM and storage configuration, which is 6 Gigabytes of RAM, and 128 Gigabytes of storage.
For cameras, you’ll get a 64MP main shooter on the back of this phone, with three other auxiliary shooters, which consist of a 2MP macro sensor, a second 2MP depth sensor, and, one last unknown sensor, which is probably one of those AI-branded, mostly gimmicky sensors.
While on the front is a 16MP sensor that is safely tucked away in a hole-punch cutout, which is now positioned at the top-center position of the phone’s screen, to imitate that premium look on Xiaomi and Samsung devices.
Remember that the Tecno Camon 16 Pro that this very phone is replacing, has an 8MP ultrawide sensor, so, I don’t know why Tecno had to swap that for some gimmicky macro, depth, and AI sensors.
The phone boosts Android 11 out of the box, with Tecno’s HiOS 7.6 version, and once again, you won’t be getting no android version updates on this phone too.
And finally, keeping the lights on is the same 5000mAh battery that was on the vanilla Camon 17, and still remains the same on the Camon 16 Pro from last year, and once again, this battery got reinforcement of 18W fast charging speeds, so, it’s a welcome addition, and one that is very much appreciated.
Tecno Camon 17 Pro
- 6.8 Inches 720p LCD display.
- 90Hz refresh rate.
- Mediatek Helio G95 processor.
- 8GB RAM + 256GB storage.
- 64MP triple rear cameras.
- 48MP front-facing camera.
- 5000mAh battery (25W fast charging).
- Dual speakers.
The Tecno Camon 17 Pro is the leader of the pack among the new Tecno Camon lineup, and as expected, it’s got the most spec upgrades among the trio.
And speaking of which device among last year’s Camon 16 lineup that this particular phone replaces, it is the Camon 16 Premier.
So, what do you got here?
Well, quite a lot, but still not enough to make someone to want to switch from the Camon 16 Premier.
First is that super large 6.8 Inches sized LCD display panel, with resolution locked at 1080p ( 1080 x 2460 pixels), and fitted with up to 90Hz refresh rate speeds.
At the helm of affairs is a Mediatek Helio G95 processor, as opposed to the Helio G90T variant that was featured on the Camon 16 Premier from last year.
Once again, you’re getting a single RAM and storage configuration on this phone, and it is a huge one. We’re talking about 8 Gigabytes of RAM and a chunky 256 Gigabytes of internal storage size, and if you’re feeling like a god, you can go ahead and insert a micro-SD card into this thing to increase the storage size further.
On the photography side of things, we’re looking at a 64MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide unit, a 2MP depth sensor, and a second 2MP monochrome (black & white) sensor.
While on the front sits a 48MP unit. Tecno has done away with the dual hole-punch cutout that was used on the Camon 16 Premier, which I considered ugly by the way, and this time, the front-facing hole-punch camera cutout has been moved to the top-center position of the phone’s screen, once again, to imitate that premium look on devices from other competing brands.
The phone comes with a dual-speaker setup, not stereo, just two speakers doing their thing, so, you shouldn’t expect the kind of sound quality that you’ll get on other devices offering same dual, but stereo speaker setups.
Keeping the lights on is a 5000mAh battery tank, and sadly enough, Tecno has swapped the 33W superfast charging system that featured on the Camin 16 Premier, and instead, used a 25W still superfast charging system on the 17 Pro.
So guys, this is roughly everything you need to know about the new Tecno Camon 17 family that launched just a few days back.
