Overview
Okay, so to begin with, the entire Galaxy S22 series that was announced earlier this year is more of a iterativeupgrade fromm the S21 series that featured last year, so we shouldn’t be expecting any major overhaul, especially in terms of the overall look of the phones.
For starters, with the Galaxy S22 being the smallest member of the family, it comes with a compact 6.1 inches display which in return makes the phone itself feel very compact in the hand, making it one of the smallest flagship smartphones that you can get today, and not just the smallest, but also the cutest looking smartphone released this year so far.
The design is nothing different from what we saw on the Galaxy S21, except that this time, it now has flat edges all around which gives off a kind of iPhone vibe, and Samsung has even worked on the screen bezels, not only making them thinner but also uniform all around, which again adds to the overall cuteness of the phone.
The entire Galaxy S22 series now uses Gorilla Glass Victus+ on both the front and back as opposed to the plastic rear panel that we saw on the vanilla Galaxy S21 last year, and it has every design feature that we’ve come to expect in a flagship phone of its caliber such as an aluminum frame, Armor aluminum frame to be precise according to Samsung, and an IP68 rating for ingress protection against water and dust.
In fact, if I were to summarise the design of the Galaxy S22 in a few words, II’dsay that it’s a perfect refinement of the Galaxy S21.
Now, back to the display, it’s a 1080p (Full HD+) AMOLED panel with a 120Hz screen refresh rate, and with it being an LTPO panel, it simply means the refresh rate can automatically step down to as low as 10Hz and back to 120Hz, depending on what is being displayed on the screen.

And coming down to the cameras, the Galaxy S22 now features a fresh new camera setup that is slightly different from what we had on the Galaxy S21, and this includes a new 50MP main camera sensor, complete with OIS and Dual Pixel Phase Detection Autofocusing technology, a new 10MP telephoto camera with real 3x optical zoom this time, as opposed to the hybrid digital zoom of the Galaxy S21, and finally, it retains the 12MP ultrawide sensor from the S21, while on the front, there is a 10MP front-facing camera, again with autofocusing technology, something that you usually don’t get from other brands.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 can record videos at a maximum resolution of 8K@24fps, and in addition to that, you get the usual 4K@30 & 60fps video recording for both the rear and front-facing camera as we’ve come to expect from Samsung phones.
Now coming to the hardware, and in Samsung’s usual fashion, depending on your location, you’re either getting the Snapdragon or Exynos variant of the phone, and here in Nigeria, you’ll be getting the Snapdragon variant, which is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, and it’s paired with 8GB of RAM, and 128 or 256GB of internal storage which, unfortunately, is not expandable.
For software, the phone ships with Android 12 and One UI 4.1 out of the box, and Samsung has committed to four years of major OS updates for this phone and one additional year for security updates, meaning that, this phone is guaranteed to get even the Android 16 update, come 2026, making it the smallest smartphone in the Android world with the longest software support.
Other features of the phone include 5G support, WiFi 6, a set of stereo speakers that are tuned by the famous AKG, wireless and reverse wireless charging rated for 15W & 4.5W respectively, the iconic Samsung DeX support, etc.
The battery comes in at a disappointing 3700 mAh, and the charging speed is rated at 25W via a USB Type-C 3.2 port.
So, in conclusion, I will say that for a current retail price of ₦478,000 here in Nigeria, the Samsung Galaxy S22 is the most complete and feature-packed smallest Android smartphone that you can buy right now, which means that it’s definitely worth every penny of the price.
