Looking for ways to customize your new OnePlus phone? Well, say no more, cause today, I’m gonna show you how to set up a custom virtual hole-punch-inspired notification LED on your OnePlus 8 (8 Pro, & 8T), and the OnePlus 9 (9 Pro, & 9R) mobile smartphones.
And here’s what it’s gonna look like by the time that we’re done setting it up.
Looks cool right?
So, to achieve this, we’re gonna have to download and use an app from the Play Store, it’s called the notifying app, and what it does is that it adds a breathing light like the one shown above, around the camera hole-punch cutout of your OnePlus 8 and 9 smartphones, and you can hook this up to different events on your smartphone, such as when you receive a new notification when your phone’s battery is low, etc, and you can even set it to work together with your phone’s always-on display feature.
A super cool app if you ask me.
So, having known all these, let’s see how we can recreate what we have above on our OnePlus 8, 8 Pro, 8T, OnePlus 9, 9 Pro, and 9R smartphones. #enjoy.
How to set up a custom hole-punch-inspired notification LED on our OnePlus 8, 8 Pro, 8T, 9, 9 Pro, and 9R smartphones.
Step One
First thing first, quickly head over to the Google Play Store and download the app I told you about, the notifying app. Or better still, you can simply tap on the “Install” button below to do so.
When you’re downloading and also have installed the app, go ahead and open it, and you should be greeted with a homepage that looks this way.
OnePlus notification LED – Step Two
From the welcome screen above, simply tap the “NEXT” button, and you’ll be taken to a new page that looks this way.
On this page, you’ll be required to give access to all the necessary permissions that the app will request from you, and when you’re done granting those permissions, simply tap on the button that says “DONE” at the bottom of your phone’s screen, and this time, you’ll be taken straight to the app’s home screen.
Step Three
From the app’s home screen, tap on the first setting option that says “Notifications“, and you’ll be ushered to a new page that looks like this.
From this page, you’ll be able to set what events or activities on your phone will always trigger the app to light up your phone’s camera hole-punch cutout when needed, events like when you receive a new notification when your phone’s battery is low when the phone is charging, when it’s fully charged, etc.
Some options require you to purchase the Pro version of the app to unlock them.
Also from this page, you can set the app to ignore any new notification, whether opened or not once you’ve unlocked the phone, and so many other things you can set up from this page.
In simple terms, this page is simply a place where you get to set how the app behaves on your phone.
So, when you’re done setting things up the way you want them, kindly find your way back to the app’s homepage, and this time, select the next setting option there which says “Notification light“, and you should be taken to a new page that looks this way.
From this new page, you’ll be able to change the style, effects, and even the dimensions of your custom hole-punch-inspired notification LED.
The “Style” option lets you set the position of the custom hole punch notification LED, both for when your phone screen is on, and when it is off. You should set it to off, which is “Disabled” when your phone’s screen is turned on, and set it to show only around the camera edge of your phone when the screen is turned off.
The “Effects” option lets you set any of the various lighting effects to your hole punch notification LED, the Pro version of the app unlocks even more of those effects.
While the “Dimensions” option lets you change the size and positioning of the custom hole punch notification LED,, you really don’t have to do or change anything here, since the app automatically adapts itself to the camera hole punch cutout of your OnePlus 8, 8 Pro, 8T, OnePlus 9, 9 Pro, and 9R phones.
When you’re done setting things up on this page, kindly find your way back to the app’s homepage.
OnePlus notification LED – Step Four
From the app’s homepage, tap on the next setting option there which says “Notification preview“, make sure that the toggle button in front of it is turned on, and once you do so, you should be looking at a new page that looks this way.
This one is more of a custom always-on display feature from the app, and what it does is that is; it gives you a brief preview of your most recent notification whenever a new one arrives.
From here, you can set how long you want the preview to be shown, what content should be included in the preview, and what should not, the sizes of the notification icon and texts that will be used for the preview, and so on.
When you are done, find your way back to the app’s homepage, and this time, tap on the option there which says “Settings“, and you be taken straight to a new page that looks this way.
This one is quite self-explanatory, “Hide on call” option lets you choose if you want the hole punch notification LED to be enabled or disabled when you have an incoming call, and “Double tap to wake” lets you use a double tap gesture to wake up your phone screen, while the rest options like the brightness settings, custom night time, etc, can only be unlocked with the Pro version of the app.
When you’re done on this page, go back to the app’s homepage, and for the last time, select the next option which says “Colors“, and you should have a new page that looks this way.
Once again, another set of self-explanatory options, as this page lets you add life to your custom hole punch notification LED on your OnePlus phones by adding colors to it.
You can choose to use one color for everything, you know the saying, “one color to rule them all”, or you can choose separate colors for separate apps and separate events on your phone.
So, quickly go ahead and set them the way you want them to be, and when you’re done, go back to the app’s homepage.
Final step – Testing our setup so far.
So, after you’re done setting and customizing things to your heart’s fill while following all the steps listed and discussed above, it’s time that we take our setup for a spin to confirm that everything is working perfectly the way it should.
To do this, go ahead and close the app, and also turn off your phone’s display, now get a second phone, and with that phone, try sending your phone anything that can prompt a new notification, be it a quick short text message, or a WhatsApp message, anything at all.
Now, when the notification arrives on your phone, if you’ve followed the steps correctly the way I explained them from step one down to step four above, you should see your custom hole punch-inspired notification LED come to life.
Here’s a picture of it working on a Samsung Galaxy phone, alongside its native always-on display feature.
Looks dope right?
So, that’s it. That’s basically how you get to set a customized virtual hole-punch notification LED on your OnePlus 8, 8 Pro, 8T, OnePlus 9, 9 Pro, and 9R smartphones.
Kindly let us know in the comments section below if this method worked for you, and if you find this tutorial helpful, kindly give it a thumbs up by sharing it, and as always, I’ll see you all tomorrow, #peace out.
