Motorola Edge X30 announced as first phones with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

Okay, so, just about a week after Qualcomm announced its latest, fastest, and greatest mobile chipset yet, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, today, we already have our first Android smartphones to have it running inside them, the Motorola Edge X30, and the Edge X30 Special Edition.

So, for starters, the X30 and X30 SE are basically the same phones in and out, with the one and only difference between them being that the Special Edition phone has the new and trendy under-display camera tech, so, it has its 60MP front-facing camera hidden behind its display, away from prying eyes, while the regular X30, though it still makes use of the same 60MP front-facing camera, this time, it is neatly tucked away in a traditional centered hole-punch camera cutout.

So, differences aside, what do we get with the world’s first smartphones to feature the latest and greatest mobile chipset for Android smartphones to date?

Well, obviously we get the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 mobile processor, and Motorola is so proud of this chipset that they even went ahead to share their first Antutu benchmark scores from the phones, and it shows an impressive 1,061,361 points, which is the highest score on the platform to date.

With the phones armed with the new chip, Motorola boasts that users should expect a 20% increase in CPU performance, a 30% boost in GPU scores, and a whopping 400% improvement in AI tasks compared to the last-gen Snapdragon 888+ chip.

On top of that, you also get a fast LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage system, and you get to make a choice between the 8GB RAM variant plus 128GB or 256GB internal storage capacity, or the beefed-up 12GB RAM variant, with 256GB capacity storage.

Okay, performance aside, what else do you get on these smartphones?

For display, we looking at a 6.7 inches 10-bit HDR10+ compliant Full HD+ OLED display with a silky smooth 144Hz screen refresh rate, and like I said before, the regular Edge X30 sports a 60MP front-facing camera that uses a 1/2.8-inch sensor and 1.2μm pixels, neatly tucked away in a centered hole punch cutout, while the Special Edition variant uses the same sensor, but this time, it is hidden right under the display.

Moving away from the display and going to the back of the phones, there, are three camera sensors which comprise a 50MP main camera that uses an OmniVision’s OV50A 1/1.55-inch sensor with OIS and has a 2.0μm sized pixels when 4in1 pixel binning is applied.

The second camera while still being a 50MP sensor uses an ISOCELL S5KGM1 ultrawide shooter, and the third one which is the last sensor comes in as a 2MP depth sensor. You can record 8K videos natively on the Motorola Edge X30 phones.

The phones are fitted with 5000mAh capacity batteries and can do up to 68W wired charging, and they both ship with Android 12 out of the box.

In terms of pricing, the Motorola Edge X30 starts at $501 for the 8/128GB variant, the 8/256GB goes for $532, while the maxed-out version which nets you 12GB of RAM and 256GB internal storage goes home with you for just $564. The Special Edition version with the under-display camera tech sets the bar at a $627 price tag.

The first sales will take place in China on December 15.
