Okay, so having seen the current prices for the different storage variants of the phone, now the question left unanswered is;
Why should anyone buy an almost 5-year-old smartphone in 2022? Is it worth it? If yes, what makes it so?
All that and more are what we’ll be answering soon in the brief overview below.
So, you’re ready?
Sure, then let’s begin. #enjoy.
Overview
Okay, so for starters, the iPhone 8 Plus was announced way back in 2017 alongside the vanilla iPhone 8 and the iPhone X, and in my opinion, aside from the fact that it’s way cheaper compared to newer iPhones, which is apparently the major driving force behind people going for it even when it’s almost 5 years old, I feel it’s the only iPhone that’s still relevant to date when counting iPhones released pre-2017, specifically the iPhone 6, 6s, and 7.
Relevant in the sense that, it’s the only iPhone from the iPhone 6 to 7 era that’s still liable to receive major software updates from Apple, such as the new iOS 16 software update when it’s officially rolled out by September, which I think gives it an edge among other similar Android counterparts in 2022.
It comes with a 5.5-inch LCD display with 1080p resolution, nothing special here, it’s among the first iPhones to feature a glass build with Gorilla Glass on both the front and back and is rated IP67 for ingress protection against water and dust.
It’s got a dual camera setup on the back, two 12MP sensors of which one is the main sensor, and the other one is the telephoto with up to 2x optical zoom. And on the front is a single 7MP front-facing camera.
Again, it’s among the first iPhones to feature 4K@60fps video recording on the rear camera as other iPhones before it like the iPhone 7 Plus maxed out at 4K@30fps.
In terms of performance, it came with the Apple A11 Bionic chipset, it’s a 10 nm Hexa-core chipset that is paired with 3GB of RAM, and given Apple’s past records of excellent hardware and software optimization, I’ll say that the iPhone 8 Plus will still be able to deliver a very solid performance in day-to-day usage, even more so now that it’ll be getting the new iOS 16 update soon.
So, speed and UI fluidity shouldn’t be a problem for as long as you’re not pushing it to its limits, though you might experience frequent overheating issues which was something the iPhones were notoriously known for until the iPhone 12.
In terms of the battery, it’s got a 2691 mAh battery, and again, given that the past iPhones before the iPhone 12 and 13 series were not known for having the best battery lives, this one might be even worse, so, if you eventually make up your mind to go for this phone in 2022, this is just one of its downsides that you should have at the back of your mind.
Other features of the phone include the 3D Touch home button which gives the illusion of a physical button when it’s just a sensor placed underneath, it’s also got a pair of stereo speakers, and since the body is made of glass, it also has wireless charging.
So, in conclusion, should one buy this phone in 2022?
Personally, I think it has to do with budget as anyone buying a 5-year-old phone in 2022 is most probably doing so because they have become cheaper.
So, if you’re looking for one of the cheapest ways to own an iPhone without it feeling like you bought an outdated device say if you went for something like the iPhone 6S or even the 7 series, then I’ll say it’s still a good smartphone in 2022, and one I can still recommend 100%.
