Overview
So, having seen the price list, that brings us to the question of;
Why would you want to buy the iPhone 6 Plus in 2022?
I mean, aside from the fact that this phone was announced way back in 2014 which makes it exactly 8 yrs old today, for that same price, you can get a pretty good Android smartphone with newer specs, better cameras (maybe), faster charging, overall better battery life, and everything else in-between.
Or if you must use an iPhone, the iPhone SE (2016) comes at a cheaper price, and it gives you a slightly better processor (Apple A8 vs A9), better camera setup (8MP vs 12MP), the latest version of the Apple iOS software, and whatnot.
But there might still be a handful of factors that will make people want to consider buying the iPhone 6 Plus in this age and time.
The first one is people who are just blindly obsessed with Apple products, especially here in Nigeria where iPhones are seen as a symbol of status, and they can’t afford to pay the expensive prices of the newer models like anything from the iPhone X and above, so the iPhone 6 Plus might just be their best chance to using an iPhone at a way lesser price from what Apple is asking for its newer iPhones today.
But apart from just blindly being obsessed with iPhones, the iPhone 6 Plus to me is still a very good piece of hardware as it comes with a 5.5 inches 1080p LCD display with the overall pixel density maxing out at 401PPI, so, it’s a pretty sharp display if you’d asked me.
It has an Apple A8 chip running inside of it, though it’s not the fastest around when compared to what we have today, it’s still more than capable of handling your day-to-day task, and even gaming up to a certain extent.
It comes with a single 8MP camera sensor on the back, and I don’t think anyone who is thinking of buying an 8 yrs old smartphone should be using the camera picture quality as a yardstick to decide if the phone is worth buying or not, and it also comes with a 1.2MP front-facing camera on the front, and just for the records, this is the same front-facing camera sensor that was first used on the iPhone 5 and 5s.
So, with a setup like this, I wouldn’t really be thinking of taking great shots on this phone.
Moving further, the phone shipped with iOS version 8 out of the box when it was announced back in 2014, and as it stands right now, it has come to the end of the road when it comes to software updates and support from Apple, so, you will only be able to upgrade it up to iOS version 12.5.5
Keeping the lights on here is a 2915 mAh power cell, and just so you know, the entire iPhone 6 lineup were notoriously known and constantly ridiculed for having one of the worst battery life ever on an iPhone, so, if you must get this phone, you should also be thinking of investing in a very good charger that won’t easily get broken no matter how many times you use it to charge your phone in a day.
So, in conclusion, if you’re looking for a cheap means to sneak into the Apple ecosystem, or you just want to use or make people see that you’re using an Apple product without paying the Apple-like price, you know what I mean, don’t you? Then I think the iPhone 6 Plus is a very good bargain for that price, and one that will still manage to give you everything you’ll ever want in a smartphone, for as long as camera picture quality and long battery life are not part of those wants, or you’re better off buying an Android phone for that same amount, or the iPhone SE (2016) for a lesser amount while getting you better specs, camera, and the latest iOS 15 software.
