Overview

So, should you buy the iPhone 14 if you already have something like the iPhone 11, 12, or 13?

Well, for owners of the iPhone 11, well, maybe you can if you want the latest that Apple has to offer right now, but it’s a big “NO” if you already own the 12 and 13, and here’s why.

First of all, comparing the new iPhone 14 to last year’s iPhone 13, it’s basically the same phone dressed in a new body, and given a new name.

For starters, the iPhone 14 comes with the exact same display we got on the 13 from last year, which is a 6.1-inch Full HD+ OLED display.

It doesn’t seem like a lot until you begin to realize the number of features you’re missing out on when compared to the Pro models.

For starters, this means that like the iPhone 13 series, you don’t get the Pro-Motion feature or 120Hz refresh rate you get on the Pro models as this one here is still stuck at 60Hz. On a half a million naira device, Apple could have at least, given us a 90Hz refresh rate, but no.

Again, since the iPhone 14 still retains the notch from past iPhones, you don’t get the “Dynamic Island” feature you get on the Pro models which was made possible by the new hole punch cutouts on them.

Another thing you still don’t get is the new Always-on display feature that’s exclusive to the Pro models. So, it just seems like you’re missing out on a lot already just for the display alone.

Now, moving down to the cameras, while the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max are rocking a new 48MP main camera sensor, the vanilla iPhone 14 and 14 Plus models are still limited to the 12MP cameras that the company has been using for almost a decade now, and you don’t even get a proper telephoto camera.

But you still get a couple of upgrades though, like the 12MP camera here uses a new larger sensor that collects more light, and the front-facing camera now has an Auto-focusing feature, but those are just minor compared to what you’d get on the Pro models.

And moving away from the cameras and coming to the performance aspect of things, well, it’s disappointing to know that the iPhone 14 still uses the now-old A15 Bionic chipset that debuted with the iPhone 13 series.

In Apple’s defense, they’re claiming this is the A15 chipset used in the iPhone 13 Pro models with 5-core graphics as opposed to the ones used in the regular iPhone 13 models with 4-core graphics.

But knowing that there is an iPhone 14 Pro out there with a more powerful processor simply makes the iPhone 14 outdated and second-class.

But on second thought, it’s not as bad as it seems though as the A15 was the fastest mobile processor last year, and even the competition is still trying to catch up with it. So, in essence, the iPhone 14 still remains one of the fastest and most efficient phones on the planet.

So, looking at these three key areas, it’s safe to say that the iPhone 14 is basically a rebranded iPhone 13 with a new 12MP camera sensor and Auto-focusing abilities on the front-facing camera, and to me, I don’t think it is worth upgrading to if you have a phone like the iPhone 13, and even if you have way older iPhones like the iPhone 12, 11, and X, upgrading to the iPhone 13 instead makes more sense since you’ll be basically getting the same hardware at a lesser price.
