The Huawei P30 Pro is basically everything that we’ve seen on last year’s Mate 20 Pro, and a little bit of what we’re yet to see on this year’s upcoming Mate 30 Pro smartphone.
For me, I’ll say that it checks all the boxes of what a top flagship device should have or be like, you just name it, is it cameras? (it has it in abundance), talk about the design (top notch), what of battery and display (King, though not in the display segment, we all know who has been wearing that crown for a long time now).
But in every other aspect, the Huawei P30 Pro is a very rugged smartphone, especially when it ships with 8GB of RAM and Huawei’s still best HiSilicon Kirin 980 Chip-set, until when we get to see the 990 shipping with the Mate 30 Pro later this year.
So without further ado, let us take some time to talk separately about all of the features of the new Huawei P30 Pro smartphone, in this short but rather detailed review. #Enjoy
The Design
Well if design is one of your main criteria for getting a new smartphone, then I bet you’re never gonna be disappointed or go wrong with the P30 Pro.
Though a few persons such as myself, might feel like it is a little too big when held in the hands, especially when you’re coming from something such as the Galaxy S10 (not the +), I mean at a dimension of 158mm in height, a 73.4mm in width, and another 8.4mm in thickness, and weighs a massive 192g.
I mean, it’s just too large and heavy for someone like myself, especially when the Galaxy S10 is just at a dimension of 149.9mm in height, 70.4mm in width, and 7.8mm in thickness, and weighs just about 157g, i will say the S10 is just at the perfect size of smartphones for me.
But notwithstanding, a lot of people might not even get bothered about these numbers, especially when you’re already used to large sizes of smartphones, or especially when you have some pretty large arms, so it all still boils down to personal preferences, what is good for Peter, might not be good for Paul, and vice versa.
But notwithstanding the size, we can’t dispute the fact that the P30 Pro is just a beauty to behold, I mean it is just a stunning and striking-looking smartphone, especially when you go for the “Breathing Crystal” color variant;
you know, it has this cool color gradient stuff that smoothly shifts from ocean blue to white and green sort of, depending on what angle the light is hitting from (I mean you already know how these things work right?).
Then the positioning of the Quad cameras on the back seems to add more icing to the already sweet cake, at a point, it somehow wanted to start looking like a Samsung device because of the separate pill-shaped cutout for the flashlight and ToF camera by the side of the main lens cameras, but that’s just it though.
Then coming to the front side of things, you’ll be greeted with a massive 6.47-inch OLED 1080p (Full HD+) display with a very little dot notch at the center on the top that houses its front-facing 32MP lens, and it is almost non-existent by the time you start making use of the phone, especially when you’re coming from smartphones with huge notches such as the iPhone bandwagons or even the Mate 20 Pro of last year, or the P20 Pro of last year as well.
The front-firing earpiece speaker is hidden under the display just as with the LG G8, and this simply translates to “No Stereo audio” being made available on this big brother, but I’m pretty sure that is gonna be a problem for a lot of folks out there.
So in conclusion, I’ll say, in terms of looks and aesthetics, Huawei scores it 100% with the P30 Pro, but I’d definitely go with the more simplistic and straight-forward design of the Galaxy S10 series, anytime, and at any day. But a good shot from Huawei though.
Huawei P30 Pro Camera
Now hear this, when it comes to the versatility of cameras in smartphones, the Huawei P30 Pro is the most versatile camera smartphone that you can ever get your hands on right now.
I mean there is really nothing new that they did here, but all they did was take what was working perfectly fine before, and even made it better, and it earned them that respect.
So the Huawei P30 Pro might not at this point be the king of the best smartphone camera in terms of overall picture quality when we still have the likes of Google Pixel 3XL around and even the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4XL just sitting around the corner and waiting to be launched, but just take a look at this.. ⇓
I bet you didn’t know there was even a bird sitting up there in the first photograph above. Well, that is just a glimpse of what a 50x zoom camera lens smart can do. Here is another one.
So the Huawei P30 Pro is the first phone to launch with a periscope camera lens, but just forget about the name for a moment and focus on what it can do for you in your photography adventure.
Well, it can zoom into very far away objects and landscapes, 5x optically, and 10 to 50x digitally with software and AI, which places the new P30 Pro on a long stretch ahead of its competitors.
And then apart from its crazy zooming capabilities, it also comes with a dedicated night mode camera, something that was absent on the new Galaxy S10 series when they first launched, and even now that they’ve gotten it through a software update, it still isn’t as good and as crisp as what you’d get on say the P30 Pro or even the Google Pixel 3XL, which is the king of them all.
So here is what Night Mode looks like on the P30 Pro, the Google Pixel 3XL, and the iPhone XS Max.
And here are just some random shots that were taken using the main sensor and the ultra-wide sensor of the P30 Pro.
So in conclusion, I will say the P30 Pro once again checks the boxes for top-grade cameras in smartphones, like I said before, it might not be the best overall camera in smartphones, but it has places where it shines and excels, and that is in its zooming capabilities and Night Mode, so, I’ll say once again, another good one from Huawei.. keep it up.
Performance and Software
The P30 Pro ships in two variants mainly, the 8GB RAM variant with either 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of storage, then you have the 6GB RAM variant with just 128GB of storage.
But one thing is sure, and that thing is, for whichever variant you’re going with, probably according to your budget, you’re definitely not gonna be disappointed with performance on any of them.
The P30 Pro is a very fast and smooth-to-use smartphone, and it is definitely gonna be like that for years to come, i mean this is called flagship, am I right?
However you might not get to experience the extra speed you’d get on say phones such as the Oneplus 7Pro cause of its stock Android UI and its 90Hz refresh-rate display that doesn’t even get to work in all apps and drains the phone’s battery faster than it should, but the P30 Pro is definitely a very fast to respond smartphone.
It ships with Android Pie out of the box, and as for now, we can’t say if it is gonna be among, the list of smartphones that will be getting Android Q when it finally launches, you know, because of the current ban that Huawei is facing from the US government, which led to Google withdrawing its license from them,
But what I know for sure is, that whatever it is that Huawei is cooking up with their still rumored new Operating System, then the P30 Pro is definitely gonna be among the list of the first smartphones to get the best of it.
So in conclusion, I will say that the P30 Pro is a phone that can keep up with the chase with its competitors after a very long time of use (whether months or years),
though sometimes I feel that the software is a little too over-cluttered and would have been better if Huawei had done some cleaning up on it before launching the P30 Pro just as Samsung has done, maybe they would have done that if Google had not banned them as well, but I think they know the best.
Huawei P30 Pro Battery
Well in terms of battery and in MKBHD’s voice, “this 4200mAh power cell, is the new undisputed heavy-weight champ, for batteries in smartphones.. Period”.
So to summarize it all, the P30 Pro is one of the best smartphones around, and that has the best battery life on smartphones.
It just literally keeps going and going, and it just seems not to die, and even when it does, don’t forget that it still has Huawei’s iconic 40W fast battery charging, which can literally get you up to 70% battery life in just 30 minutes of charging.
Wireless Charging is present as well at 15W, and it can also do that reverse wireless charging trick that we saw on the Mate 20 Pro of last year, so you see, the reason why I said this phone is literally everything that is in the Mate 20 Pro, and a little bit of what we’ll soon get to see on the Mate 30 Pro.
So the P30 Pro can literally take you for 2 days on very light usage which includes doing stuff like just making and receiving calls and sending and reading text messages, maybe using some social media apps and that’s all.
Then for the heavy users, you know those who love to leave their data switched on at all times, you’re always browsing the web, watching movies both offline and online using Netflix, YouTube, and other movie and music streaming services, downloading stuff and all, then it will sure take you for the whole day, with still a pretty good amount of battery juice left.
But for the very heavy users or Pro users as the case may be, you know I mean, those who do a lot of gaming and other cool stuff on their phone, you have a lot of background apps running and all that, the P30 Pro might succeed it for the day, but you will be rushing for either your charger or your wireless charging pad when it is getting late.
So in conclusion, I’ll say the P30 Pro is a phone that will satisfy a lot of people out there, no matter what you think your battery requirements might be when getting a new smartphone.
Huawei P30 Pro Price In Nigeria
So finally, How much do you think the Huawei P30 Pro will cost in Nigeria’s currency? Well, the smartphone is currently being sold for a price of #290,000 Naira on both Jumia and Konga online stores, which smartly translates to $804 in United States dollars, so it’s is a pretty expensive phone if you’d ask me.
Conclusion (How Good Is The Huawei P30 Pro)
So in conclusion, if someone should ask me this question “How good is the Huawei P30 Pro, or Is the P30 Pro a good smartphone to get in 2019?”.
Hell yes, it is, and you should definitely do if you get the opportunity and finance to get one.
