Introduction
Okay, so, for starters, Jumia is an online marketplace or store like every other one you can find on the internet today, and it currently happens to be the biggest and most trusted, not just in Nigeria alone, but in Africa as a whole.
But being the biggest and most trusted doesn’t mean one shouldn’t be careful when shopping for products on the platform, right?
Because, in an actual sense, Jumia doesn’t own any of the products that are being sold on the platform, as their job was only to provide a means for sellers to meet buyers easily, so, if you’re not being careful enough, you’re most likely going to end up buying any one of these three types of products;
- Either products that are defective;
- Or products that don’t look anything like what you saw on the product listing page before you placed your order;
- Or products that are just outright fake out of the box, especially those ordering wearables, such as hair, clothes and clothing accessories, and sometimes, even electronics.
But if you follow these 4 tips and steps that I’ll be showing you today, only then can you rest be assured that anything you order from the platform henceforth will be genuine, original, and straight from their respective official vendors and stores, or from any other genuine and trusted vendor on the platform.
And here is the list of things that I’ll be showing you today.
How to order on Jumia – A Precautionary Guide
Four steps you should take when ordering products on the Jumia online marketplace.
- Buy only from the Jumia official store product page whenever possible.
- Learn to always first sort products based on “Rating“.
- Always buy products that are shipped within your country, & avoid products that are tagged “Shipped from abroad“.
- And lastly, learn to filter products based on the “seller score” & overall rating which includes the number of successful sales they’ve had, & how long they’ve been selling on the platform.
So, having said that much, now let’s go over these steps one after the other.
1. Buy only from Official Jumia stores whenever possible,
...as doing this will give you a sense of trust and relaxation that you're buying this product directly from their respective manufacturers or authorized vendors.
There are lots of vendors selling the same product on Jumia, but to make sure you’re buying from the right vendor, and that you’re buying the original of said product, I always advise people to buy products that are marked or labeled “Official Store” by Jumia whenever it is possible. See the illustration below.
It’s not all products that get the official store label, but you’ll mostly find them on products from recognized and reputable brands such as Infinix, Tecno, Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, Hisense, Oppo, LG, Sony, Adidas, Casio, Indomie, etc.
And you can follow the link below to see a listing of all the official stores that you can currently find on the Jumia platform today.
See now: List of all Jumia official brand stores.
So, how do you make sure that you’re buying or ordering a product from a Jumia official store?
Well, it’s simple;
The first method is;
You can either follow the link I gave above to see the list of all the currently available Jumia official stores and from there, you can simply tap on any of them to start shopping right there, or;
If you have a product brand in mind that you want to buy from, say something like a “Samsung” product, simply type the name of the brand in the search area provided for you at the top of the Jumia website or app, and from the quick drop-down results, the one representing the official store is usually differentiated with a logo of the brand beside it as you can see from the screenshot below.
So, simply tap on it, and start shopping right away.
And please take note that if you already found the product that you’re looking for in its corresponding official store, then you don’t need to follow the other three steps below.
But if you couldn’t, then keep reading…
2. Always first sort products based on rating
By doing this, you'll first see products with the most sales and highest number of ratings and customer reviews, and with this information in hand, you can tell if a product is worth buying or not, based on other people's experiences.
Now, assuming that we couldn’t find what we’re looking for from any of the available Jumia official stores, well, that’s where the second step comes in.
So, the first thing you should do is to filter or sort the said products based on “product rating“.
Doing this will first show you products that have the highest number of ratings and customer reviews within a given category, and these are usually the most sold products inside that category or product listing page.
So, this will give you an insight or idea of what other people who have bought the same product are saying about it, and from there, you can judge the originality and ingenuity of a product based on those reviews.
Talk about learning from other people’s mistakes.
And to sort products based on rating, all you have to do is;
For those accessing Jumia on a computer or desktop browser;
- When on a particular category or product listing page, say something like “Laptops“.
- At the top right-hand side of the page, you should see a button that says “Sort by“.
- By default, the option is set to sort by “Popularity“.
- Simply change that to sort by “Product Rating“.
While for those accessing Jumia via the mobile shopping app on a smartphone;
- When in a category or product listing page, say something like “Laptops“.
- You should see a drop-down button at the top of the page, with the label “POPULARITY“.
- Tap on the button, and change the option to “BEST RATING“.
So, having done this, and like I said before, you should then first start seeing products with the highest number of ratings and customer reviews, and all you have to do is take your time to go through some of these reviews to know what other people who have bought the product are saying about it before placing your order.
3. Filter products based on where they’re shipped from
If you’re in Nigeria or in any other country where Jumia is available, I’ll advise that you filter products based on products that are shipped from your home country, for instance, products that are marked “Shipped from Nigeria” for those in Nigeria, and avoid the ones that are marked “Shipped from abroad“.
Though most times, products that are marked “Shipped from abroad” are usually slightly cheaper than the ones shipped from your home country, and most times too, they’re usually the fake ripoff of their original counterparts, being the reason why they’re less costly in order to attract vulnerable and unsuspecting shoppers.
So, for an instance, you might see a Samsung Galaxy phone that costs over ₦100,000 – 200,000 from a seller in Nigeria, being sold for half the price from a seller abroad, and for a product like that, there can only be a possibility of one of the two outcomes;
Either the phone is a refurbished Samsung phone, or it’s just an outright fake product.
Period!!
So, you should only use the “Shipped from abroad” option if a particular product or product type you’re looking for isn’t sold or readily available in your home country.
And as for those in other countries like Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, etc, I’m pretty sure that you should also see the option to sort products based on where they’re being shipped from on your Jumia mobile application or website as well.
And to apply this filter, all you have to do is;
For those on a computer or desktop browser;
- On a product category or listing page, at the left side of the page, you should see some options that move along with you as you scroll down the page, I call them the product filtering options.
- Now keep scrolling down the page with your eyes on those options until you see the option that says “Shipped from”.
- Now, from there, and depending on your location, select the corresponding option.
- For example, select “Shipped from Nigeria” for those in Nigeria.
While for those using the Jumia mobile app on their smartphones;
- While on a category or product listing page, at the top of your phone’s screen, you should see the “FILTER” button.
- Tap on it and scroll down until you see the option labeled “Shipped from” from the list of options shown to you.
- Tap on it, and select the one that corresponds with your home country, such as “Shipped from Nigeria” for those in Nigeria, and that’s all.
4. Filter products based on the “Seller Score”
Now, if after you’ve done everything in Steps 2 & 3 above, and you’re still in doubt about the originality of a product, then that’s where the last step comes in, and this includes;
- Filtering products based on the seller score,
- The number of successful sales they’ve had,
- And the number of years they’ve spent selling products on the Jumia platform
Personally, I choose to buy from sellers who have at least up to 60 – 80%+ seller score, have made up to 1000+ successful sales, and have stayed up to 3+ years on the platform.
So, let’s see how we can do this.
For those on a computer or desktop browser;
- From those same options on the left side of your screen on a product listing page.
- Keep scrolling down until you see the option that says “Seller score“.
- From there, I’d advise you to select the “60% or more” or “80% or more” options.
While for those using the mobile shopping app;
- On a product listing or category page, tap on the filter button at the top of the page.
- Keep scrolling down until you see the option that says “Seller score“.
- And once again, it is advisable you either go for the “60% or more” or “80 or more” options.
And after you’ve done this, Jumia will first start showing you products with the best-seller score, based on your selected range.
But it doesn’t end there, as you still have to check each seller’s profile individually to see how long they’ve been on the platform and the number of successful sales they’ve had so far.
This might seem tiring and time-consuming, but trust me, it’s worth it.
And you don’t even need to do it for every single product on the page as you only have to do it for the ones that you’re interested in.
So, to check each individual seller’s details, all you have to do is;
- Simply tap on a product that you’re interested in, which in turn will take you to the product description page, scroll down slowly until you see the option that says “SELLER INFORMATION“.
- For those on a computer desktop browser, you can find this option from the list of options located on the right side of your computer’s screen on the product’s description page.
- For those on a computer desktop browser, you can find this option from the list of options located on the right side of your computer’s screen on the product’s description page.
- Tap on the seller’s name and a new page will be opened where you’ll all the seller’s list of products.
- This is not the page we want to see, so tap on the seller’s name once again at the top of the page, and this time, you should see all the seller’s information.
- For those on a desktop browser, simply tap on the “SEE PROFILE” option.
- And from here, you can judge how genuine a seller is based on their score, the number of years they’ve been selling on Jumia, number of successful sales, country of origin, and even “Order fulfillment rate“, “Quality score“, and overall “Customer Rating“.
And like I said before, I personally like to pass my judgment based on the following criteria;
- Selling on Jumia: 2 – 3+ years.
- Successful sales: 1,000+.
- Order fulfillment rate: 100%.
- Quality score: 80%+
How to order on Jumia: Summary & conclusion
So in summary, let’s assume that I want to get a very good laptop from the Jumia online store, all I have to do is;
- First, I have to check if there’s an official store selling the laptop I want to buy by typing the name of the brand in the search area provided on the Jumia website or mobile app.
- If there is, then it’s a good thing, I can simply just buy from the store without going through the other steps, but if there is none, then I’ll have to proceed.
- So, first of all, I will have to go to the laptop category and change the default product sorting to sort by “Product rating” on desktop, or “BEST RATING” on the mobile app.
- After that, I have to make sure that I’m buying from a vendor that is in my home country, by filtering the products based on where they’re shipped from.
- And after that, I have to make sure that I’m buying from a seller that has up to 60 – 80%+ seller score, has stayed up to two to three years on the platform, and has sold up to 1,000+ products.
And don’t forget to read lots of customer reviews for a product before placing your order and checking out, so you’d know what other people are saying about the same product.
And that wraps it up for today on how to order on Jumia the right way, and the four precautionary steps you should take so you don’t end up with fake and low-quality products.
