What causes the “Update Apple ID Settings” error popup on iPhones?
In most cases, no one knows for sure the exact reason or reasons why this notice might be pop out from nowhere on your iPhone settings page, but one of the most obvious reasons is due to conflicting information on multiple Apple devices using the same Apple ID.
For example, let’s say you own two Apple products like an iPhone and an iPad or a MacBook, with both of them signed in to the same Apple ID, if you changed info on one device, say something like the name, or a payment method, or password, you’ll be required to update that same information on the other Apple device, thereby showing you the infamous “Update Apple ID Settings” error notice.
So, here are some of the most common reasons or factors that might cause the “Update Apple ID Settings” error notice.
- Outdated info in your Apple ID, such as outdated passwords, payment method, name, etc.
- Network errors.
- Issues with Apple’s system servers, etc.
4 ways to fix the “Update Apple ID Settings” error
Here are four ways that you can fix the “Update Apple ID Settings” notice on your iPhone.
- Update your Apple ID settings as requested.
- Sign out and in your Apple ID or iCloud.
- Reset your iPhone.
- Confirm if Apple ID and iCloud system servers are available.
Method 1 – update the Apple ID settings
So, like I said earlier if you own multiple Apple devices and have changed info on one device, and now getting the “Update Apple ID Settings” error notice on the other devices, all you have to do is simply update the settings as requested.
And to do that, all you have to do is;
- Go to your iPhone settings page.
- Tap on the “Update Apple ID Settings” error notice.
- You’ll be taken to a new page, tap “Continue“.
- You’ll be promted to enter your Apple ID password.
- If you’ve recently changed your password, enter the new password, otherwise, enter the old one.
- Sometimes, you might be required to enter your iPhone passcode as well.
- If you entered all the details correctly, your Apple ID settings should be updated, and the notice will be dismissed from your iPhone.
But, what if you did that, and the notice doesn’t get dismissed? Well, that brings us to the second method.
Sign out and in your Apple ID
So, if you followed the steps from the first method above, and still get the “Update Apple ID Settings” error notice, the next thing I’ll urge anyone to do is to sign out, and sign in back to their Apple ID or iCloud account.
Doing this will make sure that any information you’ve recently changed on your Apple ID account will be updated the moment you sign in back into it after you’ve signed out.
And to do this, simply follow the steps below.
- Go to iPhone settings page, and tap on your name.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page till you see “Sign out“, tap on it.
- You will prompted to enter your Apple ID password.
- And after that, tap the “Turn off” button located on the top right corner of your screen.
- Select the items that you want to keep a copy of on your iPhone, and after that, tap “Sign out” once again.
To sign in back to your Apple ID account, all you have to do is;
- Go back to your iPhone’s settings page, and tap the “Sign in to your iPhone” option.
- You’ll be promted to enter your Apple ID email address and password.
- If you’ve recently changed your email address or password, enter the new credentials.
- Sometimes, a six digit verification code will be sent to your registered phone number.
- Enter the code, and complete the sign in.
Again, this should in most cases fix the error notice from your phone’s settings page, but what if it still doesn’t fix it?
Well, that brings us to the third method
Reset your iPhone settings
You see, sometimes, it might not actually be the fault of Apple, but you. Resetting all settings on your iPhone will take your iPhone back to its default configuration, but you wouldn’t lose any of your files or data. for as long you didn’t choose the erase option.
So, how do you reset your iPhone? Well, it’s simple…
- Go to your iPhone settings page.
- Go to “General” settings option.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page till you see the “Reset” option.
- Tap on it, and select the first option which says “Reset All Settings“.
- Selecting this option will only reset your iPhone, and not erase your data.
- Confirm your entry by entering your iPhone passcode.
- Tap on “reset all settings” again, and wait for the phone to do it’s thing.
When the iPhone is done resetting and has booted up, go back to your settings page once again, sign in to your Apple ID account and confirm if you still get the “Update Apple ID Settings” notice on your screen.
Once again, doing this should help fix the problem in most cases, but, what if you still get the notice?
Well, maybe this time it’s not actually you, but Apple themselves. And that brings us to the last resort.
Check if Apple ID and iCloud system servers are available
Like I said, sometimes it might not actually be you, but them. Maybe the system servers in charge of the Apple ID and iCloud are down at the moment, and so, could not confirm that you’ve updated your Apple ID settings.
So, to confirm whether the servers are down or not, all you have to do is;
- Simply tap here to go the Apple’s system servers page.
- While in there, check if the “Apple ID” and iCloud options all have the green check marks on them.
- If they do, that means that the servers are available and working, but if they don’t, then that means that the servers are down for the moment, and you’d have to wait.
So, if after doing all that and you still get the notice on your phone, then factory setting your iPhone should definitely fix the problem, but remember that you’ll lose every data and file stored on the phone while doing that, so proceed with caution, and make sure that you know what you’re doing and have backed up your files to the iCloud before attempting such.
