Understanding the power of sounds that pass through our ears is crucial to reducing hearing loss. Scientists caution that sounds exceeding a specific level of decibels (dB) can be harmful to our auditory organs. In this blog, we will explore the topic of hearing protection and ways of deciding your decibels.
What Are Decibels?
The loudness of sounds is measured in decibels (dB). This means that the louder the sound, the higher the decibel. Zero decibels is approximately complete silence, while normal breathing would be around 10 dB.
The decibel scale, which calculates numbers by increasing or decreasing powers of 10, is a chart where sound intensity is stored by scientists for easier understanding. Humans can hear sounds ranging from the soft breath of a sleeping child to the reverberation of a gunshot.

How To Choose the Right Decibels
Choosing the intensity of the sounds our ears hear is not easy all the time. However, we must understand that our hearing is worth protecting whenever necessary.
There are many ways to protect our hearing by giving room to only the right amount of decibels.
How to protect our ears against harmful sounds include:
- blocking our ears with our palms when they are hurting
- using ear mufflers whenever we’re going out
- leaving noisy areas when we can
- playing our audio low while using earphones or AirPods
Sound levels that we find semi-comfortable can damage or reduce hearing because they put pressure on our ears. This is one of the reasons why extended use of listening devices, like AirPods, should be limited to two to three hours daily.
Not only do listening devices cause hearing loss or organ damage, but playing our music too loud indoors, either because of a party or in an attempt to cancel out all other sounds, can also prove to be unwise.
I hope that this short blog helps you see how to implement effective hearing protection and ways of deciding your decibels for yourself.
