Google To Upgrade Play Store In August

Google is planning to upgrade its online distribution store, the Play Store, in August 2024.

The mobile apps store, also called Google Play, has been notorious for harboring apps that are either malicious or low quality.

According to NordVPN, a Panamanian company that provides VPN services, “Fake apps can reside for months on Google Play or the App Store before they get removed.”

This situation is more Google’s fault than that of software developers, but Google is now planning to upgrade the quality of apps found on the Google Play Store by making a new policy.

“We’re updating the Spam and Minimum Functionality policy to ensure apps meet uplifted standards for the Play catalog and engage users through quality functionality and content user experiences,” said Google.

This means that applications on the Play Store that do not meet the criteria will be deleted starting from August 31, and many of them are already in that category.

Play Store distributes approximately 2 million apps to more than 3 billion users of Android devices. This move is going to cause a mixed ripple worldwide, as some apps that could be deleted might have fans.

However, this move will be worth all the trouble, as malicious actors have targeted Android users a lot in the past by uploading malicious apps to the Google Play Store.

All this comes ahead of the release of Android 15, which will first be available on Google Pixel phones, and then possibly on Samsung devices.

Google announced that there are “more new fraud and scam protection features coming in Android 15 and Google Play services updates later this year to help better protect users around the world.” The company is also “sharing new tools and policies to help developers build safer apps and keep their users safe.”

One of the possible reasons Google is trying hard to upgrade the Play Store in August, among other things, is to make Android phones safer to use.

This might affect the prices of iPhones, as Apple phones are primarily desired for this quality.
