For owners of the Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro phones, today, I’ll be showing you a very nifty but simple trick that lets you use the camera hole-punch cutout on your phones as a customizable virtual hole punch LED notification light.
Here, check this out.
And this;
And even this.
They all look cool, right?
Sure, they do.
And, so, like I said, today, I will be showing you exactly how you can replicate those, on your Google Pixel 6, and 6 Pro smartphones.
And, without further ado, let’s begin. #enjoy.

How to set up, and enable your own custom-made hole punch notification LED light on your Google Pixel 6 & 6 Pro
Step one
First of all, head down to the Play Store, and download this app called the “aodNotify” app, and make sure that you’re downloading the right one for Pixel smartphones, because it comes in different variants for different phone brands such as Samsung, OnePlus, etc.
Or better still, you can simply use the direct link below to do so.
Download now: aodNotify, LED notification light for Pixel.
And after you’re done downloading and have installed the app, simply go ahead and open it for the first time, and you’ll be greeted with a welcome screen that looks this way.
Go ahead and press “NEXT“, and you’ll be taken to a new page where you’ll be required to grant access to the necessary permissions that will be requested from you.
And here’s what to do.
- For the first permission, press “Select apps“, and you’ll be required to select the apps that you want the app to have access to, and for the sake of this tutorial, we’ll be selecting all apps.
- The second permission which says “Notification access” allows the app to have access to incoming notifications on your phone. So, tap on it, and you’ll be taken to a page where you can enable that.
- The third one says “Enable AOD“, and it requires that you must enable Always On Display on your Pixel phone, so the app will work together with it.
- And the last one says “Draw on screen“, and when enabled, it allows to app to work without being blocked or restricted by any other app on your phone.
And when you’ve granted all the permissions, they should all have blue checkmarks on them as shown in the screenshot below.
And after that, kindly go ahead and press “DONE“, and you will be taken to the app’s homepage, which looks this way.
Step two
From the app’s homepage, tap on the first option labeled there as “Notifications“, and you should have a new page that looks this way.
From there, tap on “Battery“, and you will be given three additional options;
- “Phone is charging” lights up the notification LED when your Pixel 6 phone is plugged in.
- “Phone is fully charged” does the same thing, only but when the phone is fully charged;
- And finally, “Battery low (15%)” lights up again when the battery drops down to 15%.
So, go ahead and set things the way you want them to be, and you can set the rest options such as “Phone unlocked“, and “Non removable” to your preference as well.
After that, go back to the app’s homepage, and this time, go to the second option which says “Notification light“, and you should have a new page that looks this way.
From here, you’ll be able to set the “Style“, “Effects“, and “Dimensions” of your new hole punch LED notification light for your Pixel 6 phones.
So, go ahead and tap on the first option, “Style“, and set yours the same way they’ve been set from the screenshot below.
- For when “Screen is on“, set it to “Disabled“.
- And when “Screen is off“, set it to “Camera edge“.
After that, go to “Effects“, and from here, you can choose any lighting effect of your choice to use for your hole punch LED notification light.
Don’t bother checking the “Dimensions” option, since the app already recognizes the dimension, position, and size of the Pixel 6’s hole punch cutout, as it was specifically built for Pixel phones.
Step three
When you’re done with step two above, kindly make your way back to the app’s homepage, and from there, tap on the next setting option labeled “Colors“, and you should have a new page that looks this way.
From here, you can select different colors for your new hole punch notification LED, and you can do so using “App colors” for different apps, “Battery colors” for different battery events, and even “Contact colors” for different contacts on your phone.
So, whenever you see any of the various colors on your phone’s screen, you should know the particular notification that came into your phone, even without picking up the phone.
And when you’re done setting the colors, go back to the app’s homepage, and this time, select the next setting option you see there, labeled “General“, and you should have a new page that looks this way.
From here, you’ll get to set how the app works with your Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro’s Always On Display.
- “Only on notifications” means that it lights up the Always On Display with the new hole punch notification LED on it, but only when a new notification arrives on your phone.
- While as for “Show always“, well, you know what that means.
- And there is a third option there that says “Don’t show“, and this is for those who don’t want to show the Always On Display on their phones, so, it completely disables it, and only lights up the hole punch notification LED when you have a notification, but to activate this feature, you’ll have to purchase the paid version of the app.
And, for the sake of this tutorial, we’ll be making use of the “Show always” option, because that is even the default setting option for the Pixel phones Always On Display feature.
Step four
So, after you’ve finished setting everything up from Step 1 – 3 above, then it’s time that we take the app and the settings done on it for a spin, to confirm that everything is working exactly the way we want them to.
So, kindly go ahead and turn off your Pixel 6 or 6 Pro’s display;
Now if you’ve set yours to “Show always” like I did mine above, you should first see your Always On Display light up, but without the hole punch notification LED light on it, and if you’ve set yours to “Only on notifications“, then you wouldn’t see anything just yet, not even the Always On Display.
So, what you have to do now is to get a second phone, and with this phone, try sending anything that can prompt a new notification on your phone, perhaps a quick short text message.
And once this notification arrives on your phone, for those who used the “Show always” option, you should begin to see the notification LED light in the form of a light ring, circling around your phone’s camera cutout, and it’s the same thing for those who used the “Only on notifications” option.
And personally, I’ll advise that you test the two options first, to know which one works best for you.
And that is basically everything you need to know on how to set up a customized hole punch LED notification light on your Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro smartphones.
If you have any questions, kindly leave them in the comments section below, and if you find this tutorial helpful and tricky, then kindly give it a thumbs up by sharing it, and as always, I’ll see y’all tomorrow, #peace out.
