Okay, so here’s the drill, today, I’ll show you a simple step-by-step process that lets you use the camera hole-punch cutout on your Google Pixel 5, the 5a, and 4a smartphones, as a customized virtual hole-punch notification LED.
Here, have a look.
Those ones up there are from the Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphones, but, if you follow these steps which we’ll be listed and discussed shortly, you should be able to replicate the same thing on our Google Pixel smartphones.

How does it work?
The process is pretty simple and straightforward, first is that we’ll have to download an app from the Google Play Store, it’s called the “and notify” app, and what it does is; when activated, it displays a glowing light ring around the camera hole-punch cutout of your Google Pixel phone whenever you have a new notification on it, just like we have from the screenshot above.
So, having said that now let’s see how we can create our own custom hole punch notification LED light on our Pixel 4a, 5, and 5a phones. #enjoy.
Setting up a customized hole punch notification LED light on our Google Pixel 4a, 5, and 5a phones.
Step One
First thing first, find your way to the Play Store, search for, and download the “and notify” app.
The app comes in three variants, one for Samsung phones, another one for OnePlus phones, and the last one for Google Pixel phones.
So, make sure you’re downloading the right one for Pixel phones, or better still, you can simply tap on the button that says “Install” below to do so.
When the app is done downloading and has been installed on your phone, go ahead and open it, and when you do so, you’ll be greeted with a welcome screen that looks this way.
From here, tap on the button that says “NEXT” at the bottom of your phone’s screen, and you’ll be taken to a new page, from where you’ll be required to grant access to the permissions that will be requested from you by the app.
When you’re done granting the permissions, tap on the button that says “DONE” at the bottom of your phone’s screen, and this time, you’ll be taken to the app’s homepage, and it looks something like this.
Step Two
From the homepage, tap on the first setting option there labeled as “Notifications“, and you’ll be taken to a new page that looks this way.
From this page, you can set the app’s behavior on your Google Pixel phone by setting apps and events that can activate the notification light, such as when you receive a new notification from any of the selected apps, or when your phone’s battery is low, or when you’re charging the phone, etc.
So, take your time and go through the settings one after the other, while enabling the ones you want, and disabling the ones you don’t.
Some options on the page are locked, and can only be unlocked when you purchase the Pro version of the app.
Step Three
When you’re done setting things up from the last step above, kindly find your way back to the app’s homepage, and this time, tap on the next setting option you see there labeled “Notification light“, and also make sure that the toggle button in from of it is turned on while you do so.
From this page, you’ll be able to customize the hole punch notification LED on your Pixel phones by choosing the style of display, adding effects to it, and even playing around with the dimensions.
The “Style option lets you select the area of your phone screen where you want the notification LED to be shown whenever you get a new notification on your phone, and you can set this for both when your phone’s screen is off, or on.
When your phone screen is on, simply set it to “Disabled“, and when it is off, simply set it to be shown only around the “Camera edge” of your phone.
The “Effects” option lets you set any of the various lighting effects to the notification light, with the Pro version of the app giving you more of those effects.
And finally, the “Dimensions” option lets you change the size and positioning of the notification LED, but, you really don’t have to do or change anything here, since the app automatically adapts itself to the camera hole-punch cutout of your Google Pixel 5, 5a, and 4a smartphones.
Step Four
When you’re done on the page from the last step above, go back to the app’s homepage, and this time, go to the next setting option there which says “Notification preview“, tap on it, and you should have a new page that looks this way. Don’t forget to turn on the toggle in front of it to get it activated.
If activated, this page lets you see and customize how the preview of new notifications will look when they arrive on your phone.
So, from here, you can set how long you want the preview to be shown, choose what icons to be shown in it, change the icon sizes, text sizes, etc.
Take your time, and set things the way you want them to be, and when you’re done, go back to the app’s homepage for one more time, and this time, tap on the next setting option there which says “Settings“, and you should have a new page that looks this way.
So, this one is pretty straightforward and self-explanatory, from here, you get to set how the app behaves when you have an incoming call, and from here too, you can also set how you wake up your phone when the notification light activated by activating the double-tap to wake gesture.
Once again, you’ve got some additional setting options that can only be made accessible to you if you purchased the Pro version of the app.
Step Five
For the last time, go back to the app’s homepage, and this time, tap on the next setting option there that says “Colors“, and you should have a new page that looks this way.
Once again, another straightforward and self-explanatory page, from here, you can add custom colors to the hole punch notification LED on your Google Pixel 5, 5a, and 4a phones.
You can use separate colors to indicate when you receive a notification from separate apps on your phone, say, when you receive a notification from your WhatsApp app, it glows green, blue for Facebook, and so on, and so forth.
Or, if you like to keep things simple, you can simply choose one color, and use it for everything.
Step Six (Final step).
So, when you’re done setting everything up from step one, down to step five above, it is finally time that we test-run the app to see if all the settings we have made so far on it are working the way we want them to.
So, at this juncture, go ahead and close the app, and turn off your phone’s display as well, now, look for a second phone, and with that phone, try sending yourself anything that can prompt a new notification on your phone. A quick short text message will do just fine.
When the message or whatever it is you sent arrives on your phone, you should see the glowing light ring around your Google Pixel’s phone hole-punch camera cutout, indicating that you have a new unread, or unopened notification.
Here’s one from a Samsung Galaxy phone.
So, with that, you’ve automatically created a custom hole-punch notification LED system on your Google Pixel 5, 5a, and 4a smartphones.
Please let us know in the comments section below if this worked for you. If you find this tutorial helpful, please give it a thumbs up by sharing it. As always, I’ll see you tomorrow. # Peace out.
